The rules of Olympic table tennis games are as follows:
Equipment Specifications
- Table: It is 2.74 meters long and 1.53 meters wide, made of fiberwood, with a dark and glossy paint coating. A 2-centimeter-thick line marks the playing surface, and it is divided into two halves by a net.
- Net: It is suspended by two poles attached to the table and stands at a height of 15.25 centimeters.
- Racquet: It is approximately 17 centimeters long and 15 centimeters wide, mainly made of wood, with a rubber surface on both sides, usually black and red.
- Ball: It is usually orange or white, weighs about 2.7 grams, and is spherical with a diameter of 40 millimeters.
Game Format
- Singles: It adopts a best-of-seven games system. Each game is played to 11 points, and the player needs to win by at least two points. If the score reaches 10-10, the game continues until one side gains a 2-point lead.
- Team Events: It uses a best-of-five matches system. Each match is a best-of-five games system. In the team event, there are four singles matches and one doubles match. A team consists of three players, and each player plays twice13.
Serving Rules
- Coin Toss: At the beginning of the game, the umpire tosses a coin. The winner can choose to serve first, receive first, or choose the side of the table.
- Serving Method: The server must hold the ball with an open palm, toss it up vertically at least 16 centimeters, and strike the ball so that it bounces first on the server's side of the table before bouncing over the net to the other side. In singles, the server can serve to any part of the opposite table. In doubles, the serve must be diagonal1.
- Serving Rotation: After every two points, the serving player and the receiving player switch. When the score reaches 10-10, the serving player and the receiving player switch every point.
Returning Rules
- Legal Return: The ball must bounce once on the opponent's side of the table after being hit by the opponent. If the ball hits the net but still goes over and lands in the correct area, it is a let serve and the serve is replayed. The ball must not hit the net and go off the side, or fail to bounce on the opponent's side.
- Faults: It is considered a fault if the server does not meet the serving rules, if the ball does not land in the correct area, if the ball is hit before it bounces on the player's side, or if a player touches the table with their free hand.
Scoring Rules
A point is scored in the following situations:
- The opponent fails to return the ball correctly.
- The opponent hits the ball out of bounds.
- The opponent violates the rules.
- The server hits the ball into the net and it falls onto the server's side.
