How many games in a table tennis match
The number of sets in table tennis depends on the type and level of the game.
Regular matches
Olympic Games: Singles matches are played in a 4 out of 7 sets system and 4 sets need to be won in order to win.
World Championships: Singles matches are 7 games to 4, doubles matches are 3 games to 2. Team matches consist of 4 singles and 1 doubles match, each match is 5 games to 3.
World Table Tennis Team Championships (WTT): Singles matches are 5 games to 3 wins, doubles matches are 3 games to 2 wins.
WTT (World Table Tennis Team Championships): Singles matches are 5 games to 3 in the early rounds, 7 games to 4 after reaching the semi-finals, doubles matches are 5 games to 3.
Recreational matches
The number of innings for recreational matches is more flexible and can be set to 2 out of 3, 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 7 as needed, etc. The specific rules are decided by the organizer.
Specific Match Rules
Serve rule: The serving team should throw the ball vertically on the palm of the hand that does not hold the racket, and the ball must reach a certain height before it can be hit.
Scoring Rules: The first player to score 11 points in a set wins the match. If the score is tied at 10, the first player to score 2 more points wins the match.
Change of Direction: Every two balls will be exchanged, and at the end of each set both players have to change their direction of play.
Re-serve situation: If the serve touches the net or there is any other error, the serve has to be re-served.
