when did table tennis became an Olympic sport

    1988

Table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988. Table tennis was first included as an official sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Table tennis featured four events at the 1988 Seoul Olympics: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles. In order to increase the excitement of the competition, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), in consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other interested parties, decided to replace the doubles competition with a team competition at the 2008 Olympic Games.
